NEWSLETTER: Term 4 Week 9 – 10 December 2015

Dear Parents

The end of year events held at VAS are very special. The Leavers’ Dinner held last Thursday night was one of these special events. The hall looked amazing, hard to imagine that behind all that finery is an ugly old hall! The children looked fantastic as well. The food was delicious too! The highlight of the evening was the unexpected (to the children) arrival of John Key as the guest speaker. Huge thanks to Charlotte Barclay in room 2 who wrote to the prime minister earlier in the year, asking him to come along. We got a response back from his office very quickly telling us that he would be delighted to attend. The proviso was though, that we had to keep it very low key (sorry!) and not tell everyone. So we had the secret service, the police helicopter and the prime minister here! Have a look at the photos on our Facebook page.

The Carol Service held on Wednesday night was absolutely wonderful. The singing, the readings and the dance were all superb and what a beautiful venue. Huge thanks and congratulations to the organising team of Alison Laxon, Catherine Kelly, Jane Cameron, Esther McEwan, Ally Young along with all the teachers. Hours of work in preparing, practising and organising paid off as it was a fantastic event.

Thank you to the Board of Trustees, Bob Weston Chair, Andrew Cleland, Katie Williams, Karen Ngan, Nicky Hall, Michael Holloway and Alison Laxon. You have all worked very hard to ensure that the school is governed at such a high level. This has ensured that the high standard of education and community involvement has continued.

I need to give thanks to everyone on the PTS. Shelley Cunningham took the helm this year and has continued the tradition of leading a fantastic team of people in organising so many events throughout the year. Everything I have attended has been well organised, fun and always a great fundraiser for the school. I know that many Friends of the PTS have also helped in many ways, so thanks to you too.

There are about 45 VAS families (of year 6 children) for whom this is the last farewell. Their youngest child is leaving VAS, so their time with us is over. Thanks to all of you for your wonderful contributions to the school over many years. To all the families leaving Victoria Avenue School this year, thank you for your support of the school and I am sure you take away many fond memories.

More thanks, this time to all the Year 6 families, for your very generous gift of four friendship seats decorated in the house colours. What a lovely thought for our children who sometimes need to find a friend to play with. We appreciate your kindness in donating these to the school for future generations to enjoy.

I have already mentioned some of teachers leaving, but we have one more going. We are sad, but pleased for Nikki Boyens that she has won a promotion to Dean of the Juniors (years 0 – 3) at St Cuthberts.

Thanks also to Jane Edgar and Beverley Harper who opened the new entrant classes during this year and have both done a fantastic job transitioning the new children into school.

Andy Butler, Ange Rathbone, Anna McDonald and Clare Fuller have all been working in the school as release teachers this year and we thank them for the wonderful way they have fitted into our school.

So to all the staff; teachers, teacher aides and admin staff thank you all for your dedication and hard work with our lovely students.

Please have lovely restful holidays, drive safely and enjoy the precious time with your families.

Kind regards

Janice Adamson

2016 Classes

Teachers 2016

The class notifications will be sent home in two ways. All parents will get an email with the class their child is in, and you will also get a photo and bio about the new teacher. You will also be given a notice saying which class they are in which will be put in with the report. Children will meet their new teachers tomorrow so you can all have a lovely conversation after school.
