NEWSLETTER: Term 4 Week 8 – 3 December 2015

Dear Parents

I was out shopping last weekend, not yet December and everywhere there were Christmas carols playing. I had a momentary bah humbug moment along the lines of ‘it’s too early for Christmas carols’ and then I took a mental note of my negativity and decided to feel happy because it signalled the start of a time of year I love.

I was proud of myself for practising mindfulness. It’s the latest ‘thing’, being mindful. It is however, the latest thing that is something very worthwhile for all of us to practise; that and being grateful.

Being mindful and grateful. Increased gratitude is a common result of practicing mindfulness. As we start paying more attention to our thoughts, we notice where we block ourselves from appreciating the good things in life.. We can’t feel grateful for things we don’t notice, and so mindfulness and gratitude go hand-in-hand.

Well I certainly notice the fantastic contribution that many people make to ensure that our children have the best possible experience at VAS. Sometimes I take a moment just to enjoy what is happening. Yesterday at athletics I stood at the finish line and watched year 0 and 1 children race their hearts out. I took in the encouragement given by all the parents. I took in the way the house captains and year 6 helpers were focussed on their roles. I took in the way the teachers marshalled and encouraged all the children. Mostly I took in the enthusiasm, determination and pleasure all the children showed before, during and after their races.

I am always grateful for the supportive families we have here. I am grateful to parents who have brought their children up to be determined, enthusiastic and who get pleasure from trying their best. I am grateful for all our teachers with their enthusiasm and passion for learning, I am grateful for being able to spend time in their company.

I am grateful for the support we get from our community. The contribution that we in the school all value is your contribution of time. Time to help us on trips, in classrooms, at sports and cultural events, at camps. Time to sort books, staple on walls, count money, cook sausages, sell cakes and iceblocks, take lunchtime activities, run the creative shed, coach sports team, help at cross country, set up and tidy away, donating goods and services, finding sponsors, organising events, decorating, baking, being class parents.

I am grateful for the amazing PTS who work so hard to make our school a friendly place and who fundraise tirelessly to help us get the resources we want. A heart felt thank you to every person in our community who has contributed to our fabulous school. You are why we are such a great place for children!

So, in those moments of road rage, shopping stress and annoying children that inevitably happen to all of us at this time of year, take a deep breath and be mindful – if nothing else it will stop you screaming!

Carol Service

The children have been practising very hard for next Wednesday’s Carol Service at the cathedral. We look forward to a wonderful turnout.

Kind regards

Janice Adamson
