This week, the whole staff and board of trustees went out for afternoon tea. Once a year we have a ‘mystery’ outing where staff leave the school and go offsite to a venue where there is a surprise experience waiting for them.
This week, JP, a clown come juggler, come comedian, come allsorts, was the surprise. JP is a French performer and he entertained the staff as we had afternoon tea. He was funny, clever, silly, a little bit slapstick, had audience participation, jokes and balloons.
What was so lovely about the experience, was that we were outside of school for a couple of hours. At a time of the year when teachers are writing reports, analysing data, thinking ahead to next year, and ancillary staff are organising start of year systems, it was so refreshing to step out of our roles and take time to enjoy something silly.
The day after our silliness, a dear old friend came to see me and he was bemoaning the fact that some of the other old people he mixes with have lost their silliness, their playfulness and he missed being around people who could still laugh and joke around.
It got me thinking about how much time we make to just be playful. Our lives are so busy, with work, with family commitments, with deadlines and ‘must do’ things that I fear we sometimes miss opportunities to be playful with our children as well as our friends.
I recall speaking to a father in the school earlier this year and we had both finished our house renovations around the same time. We were talking about our new carpet and I said rather sheepishly that I had rolled around the floor the day the carpet arrived. He burst out laughing and said that he has also rolled around on the carpet with his children, making carpet angels! A kindred spirit! But being playful lowers our stress levels, makes our children love to be with us, glues friendships, so we need to set aside feelings of sheepishness and just embrace it!
Being silly and being playful especially with our children, gives rise to strong family bonds and wonderful childhood memories. Our children will not remember the hours you ferried them to after school activities, but they will always remember the day you played roly poly down One Tree Hill with them.
Take time this weekend to be silly. Go on, your children will love it!
