Newsletter: Term 4 Week 4 – 7 November 2019

Dear Parents,

2020 Councillors

We will be undertaking the voting for 2020 councillors and house captains in a week or so. I had a query from a parent last year, who asked what the values were that we based our decisions on. The VAS values of: we care, we are responsible and we are honest are at the core of the VAS culture. However, given that the majority of voters are 9 and 10 year olds it is more than just values. They choose children who are never mean to anyone, children who look out for or look after others, children who step up and take on responsibilities in the classroom and around the school. They value calmness in their peers as well. Parents assume that the children will choose the ‘popular’ children but we are often surprised at just how intuitive our children are and how they vote for children based on their qualities not their friendships.

It is important that children and parents understand the democratic process of nominating and voting for these positions. The process is as follows:

Year 5 children are given a list of all Year 5 students. They are asked to circle one girl and one boy whom they would like to be a councillor. This process is not public, children do it privately in class. Teachers and senior managers are also given the list of names and they also nominate one boy and one girl. Jane Cameron tallies the results and the six girls and six boys with the highest number of votes become councillors.

The same process is followed for house captains, except that lists of Year 5 students in each house are given to all the children in Year 5 in that house. The votes are then tallied as above.

It is important that children and parents understand that no member of staff can influence the results or has the power of veto. The process is fair and transparent.

Of course, the natural consequences of voting for councillors and house captains is that there are many children who are disappointed. Learning to deal with disappointment is part of life, we can’t shelter them; they need to be able to process disappointment appropriately. It is ok to cry with disappointment (as many All Blacks did just recently), but the well rounded child moves past the disappointment and channels it to become more determined to do better next time. The child who has hysterics and has his/her friends all crowded around trying to comfort them does not yet have the resilience to move on and needs adult help in improving their resilience.

Councillors and house captains will be announced at the combined leavers’ assembly/prizegiving on 13 December.

Kind regards
