Newsletter: Term 4 Week 3 – 29 October 2020

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

On Monday the 16th November at 9.15am we will be having a Powhiri at school to welcome our new Principal Jane Bush. We are very honoured to have our friends from Ngati Whatua Ōrākei to assist us with this special event.

You are very welcome to join us for the Powhiri. If the weather is fine we will be holding it on the school field. However if it is raining we will have the powhiri in the school hall. This means that we would have to limit the number of guests. I am hoping that it is fine because it would be so wonderful to have you all there to share in giving Jane Bush a warm welcome from our whole school community.

The VAS Halloween disco is on this Friday (30th October):
Years 0 to 3 – 5.30 to 6.30pm
Years 4 to 6 – 6.45 to 7.45pm

Tickets are only $10 and include a hot dog & chips or popcorn – yum! You can purchase tickets at the school office.

This is a fundraiser organised by our truly outstanding ‘Friends of VAS’. They are a small but gorgeous group of our parents who literally roll up their sleeves and make events like this happen.

Ngā mihi nui

Year 2 Project-Based Learning

This term’s Project-Based Learning for the Year 2s kicked off with a hiss and a roar to the delight of the children last Friday. With the topic title of ‘Trapped in Ice’, the children were given a taster of what it’s like to be a palaeontologist. As part of discovery play, they hammered through frozen balls of ice revealing a myriad of prehistoric mammals trapped in ice. They chiselled and dusted their way to carefully uncover pieces of bones that once belonged to a woolly mammoth. (They really don’t mind that they are just plastic models!)
It was wonderful to observe the children working collaboratively and enjoying the hands on activities.

A visit to the Auckland War Memorial Museum is next in the plan as we take the education outside the classroom. In the meanwhile, the children are busy asking questions and finding the answers to their questions. What is the ice age? How did it come about? How long does it last? What animals lived during the ice ages? These are just some of the questions that we are exploring in the classrooms.

Absences

When a student is to be absent from school, please notify the school by 9.15am by using the Report Absence Button on the homepage of the website or through the VAS School App. Alternatively you can call 520 0602 to advise. Children arriving late to school must check in at the office. When children leaving during school hours a parent must sign the child out at the office. As we have a “safe to school” policy any unexplained absences will be contacted by phone if time permits.

Reminder: Please shut / lock the school gates

Please be reminded how important it is to always keep our school gates shut.

For the safety of our students, we ask all parents and caregivers to please make sure you always close and lock the gates when you enter and/or leave the school grounds.

Bays and Remuera Lit Quiz
On Thursday 22nd October Year 5 and 6 pupils Willow Reid, Claudia Evison, Isabel Altoft, Cosmo Honey, Emily Penrose, Zach Hood, Robbie Baker and Solomon Cooper all represented the school at the Bays and Remuera Lit Quiz held at St Mary’s School, Ellerslie.
The teams had been reading for many months in order to know as much as possible about the books. There were 11 schools competing, each with 2 teams.
Remuera Primary took out the trophy but our two teams performed well coming 12th and 14th.
Thanks to all the children for the hard work and time they put into preparing for this.
