NEWSLETTER: Term 4 Week 3 – 27 October 2016

Dear Parents

Those of you who have done alterations to your house, or built from new, will understand the frustrations of the building process. We are in the planning process for the renovations to rooms 19, 20 and 21 and our level of frustration is currently running very high!

There is a subsidence issue across the back of the school towards the forest area. Over the years there has been natural slippage on this slope which has undermined the original foundations of these three classrooms. Adding to the subsidence are the roots of the pohutukawa which are now substantial trees. However, not only has the subsidence affected rooms 19 – 21, rooms 15, 16, 17, 18, 22, the library and the atrium are also affected to varying degrees.

Herein lies the source of our frustration. The Ministry of Education only has a certain amount of property money to go around. Leaky buildings and the Christchurch schools rebuilding programme account for a significant portion of these funds. Add to this, the roll growth being experienced in schools across Auckland which has led to new classrooms being built and the pot of available money decreases further. We do have an allocation of money for this project, but with building costs in Auckland rising pretty much weekly, the original estimate from 2014 is now not enough.

The PTS raised a significant amount of money in 2013 to be put towards creating a lovely outdoor learning space off rooms 19 – 21 as part of the overall refurbishment. Rest assured, the board has that money put aside and earmarked for this project. Part of our frustration is because we want the people who helped raise these funds to have the opportunity to see it being used as was originally intended, within a decent timeframe.

So, where are we at? We have the design (including the lovely outdoor learning space) and the detailed plans for the new piling to withstand any future subsidence ready to be submitted to council. We are currently holding off going any further as we have identified a couple of significant aspects around access of the machinery required to fix the subsidence affecting rooms 15 – the library, that may impact on the rooms 19 – 21 part of the overall project. We intend going to the Ministry of Education and laying this all out on the table to see if we can access increased funding for the project. Rest assured that the board are determined to get the best quality result for VAS.

All going well, the project will continue on track to have the work underway in term 1 2017. This time frame works very well for us because we have spare rooms available in the first part of the year (the new entrant rooms) for the three classes.

Class Blogs

All our students have been working so hard all year and there are many outstanding examples of the work they have been doing uploaded to the class blogs. Go into our website, have a look at the blogs and make comments. The children love to see that people are viewing their blogs.

Kind Regards
Janice Adamson
