Newsletter: Term 4 Week 2 – 22 October 2020

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

It has come to the time of the year when we start to think about our classes for 2021. If you wish us to take any information into consideration as we form classes, please email me. Please note that we do not accept any requests for specific teachers. Email your thoughts by Monday 2nd November and note that requests sent in after this date will not be able to be actioned.

Our class placement process is comprehensive. We gather data from teachers who then create draft lists considering social dynamics and student learning needs as well as ensuring a gender balance. We then rework the lists until we have our final class placements. Our teachers are wonderful observers and judges of the relationships in their rooms, and we tap into this expertise when making up class lists.

Towards the end of the year when students are told what class they will be in I encourage you to be positive about their class placement as they take their cue from you. Our children test our reaction to news to gauge how they should react, we need to be the reassurance they need. So be positive, reassure them and show them that you are confident that they will have a good year.

Quiz Night

Last Friday was our annual Quiz Night. It was an outstanding event again -the organising team had gone to so much effort to make the hall look stunning, have a look on our Facebook page! It was such a fun night with the quiz, dancing, laughing and just enjoying ourselves. If you didn’t make it to this year’s quiz night, then please do not miss it next year! Huge thank you to the team who gave up their time to organise such a great event. A particular thanks to Manuka Doctor who sponsored the event.

Thank you to the team: Margot Kynoch, Vic and Hamish Edgar, Abby and Nick Maire, Shelley and Craig Cunningham, Jeremy Horton and Tori Arnold.

News from Years 0 and 1

This term the Juniors are exploring Drama as part of the Arts area of the curriculum alongside their learning about ‘Fairy Tales’.

They are lucky to have a specialised drama teacher working with classes for a few sessions. Drama draws on children’s curiosity and extends the creative play that comes naturally to them. It stimulates creative and critical thinking and is a rich medium for learning. Part of the sessions explore role playing which leads to an increase in empathy and participation in worlds wider than their own. As part of this learning area the Junior School are also visiting the theatre production of ‘Greedy Cat’ this term, a great experience in learning how to be part of an audience and respond to a live performance.

Here they are exploring the story of The Three Little Pigs.

Sports Update – Term Four 2020

After some disruption in Terms Two and Three we hope for a more settled term of sports events.  In addition to weekly PE lessons with Mr Hemus, all students will take part in school sports. These are held on Tuesday afternoons for Years 5 & 6 and alternate Friday afternoons for Years 0-4.

This week the Zone Gymnastics competition took place with a number of our students  qualifying for the Champion of Champions competition on Thursday 29 November.

Athletics, involving a range of running, jumping and throwing activities, will be the main focus of PE lessons this term. These lessons will culminate in Athletics Days being held for all year groups as follows…

  • Years 5 and 6 Athletics Day – This will be held on Tuesday 10 November at Mt Smart Stadium. This event will qualify students for the Remuera Zone athletics day planned for Monday 23 November.

  • Years 3 and 4  Athletics Day – This event is planned to take place at school on Wednesday 2 December.

  • Years 0, 1 and 2  Athletics Day – This event will take place at school on Friday 4 December.

Further details about all events will be emailed closer to the time – If you are able to support the Year 5 and 6 athletics day on 10 November in any way can you please complete the form using this link

This term the following water safety programmes are planned:

  • Year 6 classes will take part in a water safety programme that introduces them to basic skills in sailing and kayaking – 8 December (Room 1 ), 9 December (Room 2), 10 December (Room 3)

  • Year 5 classes will all take part in the Beach Ed programme run by the Mairangi Bay Surf Life Saving Club on 12 -13 November

  • Years 0-4 classes will have a session of Surf to School at school run by Surf Lifesaving New Zealand which also includes a focus on safety in and around water on the 29 – 30 November (Years 3 & 4), 9-10 November (Years 0-2)

Also this term the Parnell Cricket Club will be providing a programme for all students that focuses on developing an awareness of cricket skills. These sessions will be spread throughout the term.

At the end of this year we hope to offer a Triathlon for Year 5 and 6 students who are keen to take part. This event is still in the planning stage and dependent on us securing an appropriate venue to hold the event.

Remuera Zone Gymnastics

On Monday the 19th of October, members of the gymnastics team competed in the Remuera Zone Qualifying Event.  All the students represented VAS superbly and the day produced some outstanding individual and team performances. In the Year 3 girls category we had some excellent team and individual performances. The team of Alina Wang, Matilda Bebbington and Amelia Bartle placed 2nd in the team event while individually Alina placed 2nd overall and Amelia placed 4th.  The year 5 girls category produced both an outstanding individual and team performance with the team of Sarah Kennard, Alena Thorman, Nina Lockhart and Stella Rumbold placing 1st overall in the team event. Individually Sarah placed 1st overall, Alena placed 3rd overall and Nina placed 7th overall. Our solitary male competitor Guang Nian Li placed an amazing 3rd overall. To wrap up the event the Year 6 girls team of Willow Reid, Minako Purdy, Sophie Thorman and Taylor Young placed an impressive 1st overall. Individually Willow placed first overall for the 2nd year in a row! Sophie placed 3rd overall and Minako placed 7th overall.
