Newsletter: Term 4 Week 1 – 15 October 2020

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

Welcome back to a very busy term. We are all looking forward to our new principal, Jane Bush starting at VAS in week 6. Consequently I am very privileged to be the acting principal with the job of keeping our wonderful school going until she arrives. I really appreciate the kind messages of support I have received.

If you were able to enjoy a holiday with your children, I hope it was very relaxing. For those of you who still had to work, I hope you enjoyed the break from the school lunches / drop off / pick up routine!

Today at 9.30am VAS participated in the ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. The ShakeOut drill is held across the world to remind people of the right action to take during an earthquake — Drop, Cover and Hold. The drill is an important part of our VAS Health Safety plan but also more importantly teaches our students of the importance of being prepared.

Tomorrow we will be acknowledging Pink Shirt Day which is a national bullying prevention campaign run by the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. To show our commitment to creating an environment that is safe, welcoming and inclusive of all students we are encouraging all students to wear something pink tomorrow.

While I am talking about health I want to just remind you as a SunSmart school all students need to wear a hat this term. Please make sure it is named.

This term will go by very quickly as there are many important activities and events on. For the first two weeks, children will be undertaking reading, writing and mathematics testing so the teachers can report achievement to parents in the end of year report.

Chaos at the School Gate

Unfortunately this week I have heard about inconsiderate parking outside the school. Our neighbours are quite rightly very annoyed at people parking across their driveways. Auckland Transport have also contacted me with complaints. So please be considerate of our neighbours and park further away rather than across driveways.

The role of the Friends of Victoria Avenue School is to organise fun events for the whole school community and drive fundraising projects.

If you would like to be more involved, please email [email protected] or

come along to our next committee meeting on Tuesday 20 October at 7.30pm in the school staff room.

Reminder: Please shut / lock the school gates

We have a number of new entrants starting this term, including a student who wanders and may go missing.  This reminds us of how important it is to always keep our school gates shut.

For the safety of our students, we ask all parents and caregivers to please make sure you always close and lock the gates when you enter and/or leave the school grounds.

The Auckland Table Tennis Association is offering a free 4-week after school table tennis coaching program to Year 5 and Year 6 students from several Primary Schools including VAS. Registration will be based on a “first come first served” basis.

Hi, my name is Georgia Thompson, I’m an ex-pupil of VAS and my Mother works at the school. I’m just finishing my third year at Otago University and am looking for babysitting / nannying work during the holidays. I’m available from 16 November until 10 February. I have experience in babysitting and love young children. I have a car if that is required. You can contact me on 021 178 0473, or [email protected]

Launchpad Champions (formerly Bible in School) is an opt-in Christian Values Education programme. It runs for the last five weeks of each term in Room 2 during the Thursday lunch break, 12.45 – 1.15pm. All children who attend the Launchpad Champions programme for any number of sessions need to have written permission from a parent or legal guardian.

Our Launchpad Champions programme is a fun 30-minute session that encourages tamariki to make positive life choices and grow their sense of mana, self-worth and character. The programme is presented through the art of kōrero (story-telling), multimedia, interactive games and activities.

Each lesson has a specific learning outcome and reinforces the values found in the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa. Stories that are relevant and inspiring to tamariki are presented from the Bible, NZ Māori History and around the world. Some of the values presented are respect, compassion, resilience, making good choices, helping others and how to be a good friend.

Launchpad Champions is provided without charge by volunteers from your local community all of whom are police vetted, trained and abide by our Code of Expectations.

Permission forms are attached below, or available from the school office.
