Welcome back, term 4 is a very busy term. A parent recently made a comment to me that no learning happens in term 4, it is all taken up with extra ‘stuff’. Oh my goodness, of course learning happens throughout the term. We do a lot of assessing in the first couple of weeks of the term and we use this data to look at students previously identified as being at risk of not achieving standard. If they haven’t reached standard or are on track to reach standard by the end of November we discuss the learning programmes for these students with their teachers. For the rest of our learners, they still are being challenged in their literacy and maths programmes and the inquiry learning for the term is based around creativity and enterprise (junior and middle syndicates) or science (senior syndicate).
As for the other ‘stuff’, yes, there are all sorts of exciting things happening, all of which are learning experiences for children.
Year 6 have pubertal change sessions. Year 3 to Motat as part of their inquiry topic and Years 5, 6 to Mindlab as part of their inquiry topic. Year 6 have Waterwise this term and year 5 have Beach Ed at Mairangi Bay. Athletics day is on 8 November, a change of venue this year – Mt Smart stadium, so hopefully more parents will find this location easier to get to.
The ukulele players will participate in the ukulele festival later in the term, there will be football coaching, running club and the VAS triathlon. Year 6 will have a bike safety session with Constable Gordon.
The Year 6 children will have their activity day (date TBC), then the Leavers’ dinner on 8th December. We will hold a combined councillors’ and house captains’ announcement with the Year 6 final assembly on 9th December. The last week of term sees the Carol service on 12th December and prizegiving at Baradene on 13th December. School finishes on Friday 16th December at 12:30pm.
Yes, a very busy term, but a most enjoyable one, with lots of academic, cultural, sporting and social learning happening all term.
Just a reminder that hats must be worn this term. Please also ensure that children are wearing the correct uniform each day. Please leave the fancy socks and coloured tshirts/skivvies for the weekend. It should be warm enough for children to not need extra colourful layers showing, their fleece over the polo shirt should be adequate.
Readathon Sponsor Money
Thank you to all those who have brought in their readathon money. Those who have not can you please bring their money by Monday 17 October at the latest so we can finalise the total and the prize winners.
Parent Code of Conduct at Sports Events
A timely reminder that parents have a responsibility to be good role models when they are watching children’s sports events. We have a culture of encouragement at VAS, so it would be great if all parents supported us through using encouraging words and actions on the sideline.
