Newsletter: Term 3 Week 9 – 19 September 2019

Dear Parents,

Last week I shared with you the learning about kakapo that one of our year 4 classes has been undertaking. The project continued this week. In appreciation of the children’s fundraising efforts, the Auckland Zoo made access available to them access  to view kakapo at their vet hospital – seeing kakapo being fed and checked by veterinary staff, plus a half-hour kakapo talk.

On Wednesday this week my class, Room 17 and some parents went to the Auckland Zoo.

Before all of that we had a Kakapo Day and we raised $1500…that is a lot. When we heard that much money had been raised our teacher sent a message to the Zoo saying we raised $1500. When the Zoo saw the message they gave us a free trip to see the Kakapo at the Zoo.There was a funny bit and a wow bit. The wow bit was seeing the Kakapo’s face. The funny it was when it pooped!

Remuera Zone Cross Country
On Tuesday, 31 children from years 5 and 6 went to St. Kents to represent VAS in the Remuera zones cross country competition. All the children ran well, put in their best effort and had a great morning. Special mention to Alexis Tree who placed second in the year 5 girls race and to the year 5 girls who came third in the overall competition.
Thanks to all the parents who came out to support and help.

Collect Yummy Fruit Company stickers (you can find them on apples and fruit) so that Victoria Avenue School can win a share of $200,000 free DG Sport sports gear!

  1. Place the Yummy stickers on the sticker collection sheets and / or
  2. Place the cut-out Yummy labels (from fruit bags) on the cut-out label collection sheets
  3. Return the completed (or partially completed) sheets to the Victoria Ave School office by 20 September 2019. Make sure your name and room number are on the sheet as we will give a prize to the student(s) that collect the most stickers and iceblocks to the class room with the most stickers

Yummy apples and fruit are available from New World, Pak’n Save and other participating stores.  The more stickers VAS collects, the more sports gear we receive.  Last year, VAS qualified for $1,900 worth of free sports gear which is an amazing effort.

Start collecting today :)

Thanks to rooms 9 and 10 for their yummy contributions to the bake sale on Friday. They made a fabulous $434 which goes towards the school’s Forest Project. Thanks also to the whole school for supporting.

Thanks to all those who have taken part in the Fun Run fundraising. Just a reminder that the last day for ordering prizes is Friday 20th (tomorrow). Orders for prizes can be done through the child’s online Fun Run profile page. If your child does not have an online profile page, but is eligible for a prize, please let the school office know what prize they would like so we can order it for them.

Lost property items will be on display outside Room 9 after school on Tuesday 24 September. Thanks so much to Yvonne Robinson for her ongoing dedication to sorting lost property.

With more than 15 years of teaching experience, LeeAnna has taught ballet to students from over 15 different countries. She studied classical ballet for the majority of her life in the United States, and has taught at international schools in Switzerland and in Myanmar (Burma). Since her relocation to New Zealand, she has taught after-school ballet at both private and public primary schools.

These Ballet classes will be a fun introduction to formal ballet training. Children will learn ballet terminology, movements, and fundamental positions with an emphasis on improving body awareness and coordination. Ensuring that students receive individual attention within the group setting will be important during classes.

Ballet attire is encouraged: leotard, tights, ballet slippers, and (optional) skirt.
Mostly importantly, students should wear clothing and shoes that are flexible and allow for comfortable movement.

Cost: $65
**Please note, the ballet classes will only be held for 3 weeks during Term 4
