Newsletter: Term 3 Week 5 – 22 August 2019

Dear Parents,

Room 17 initiative

We are having a mufti day tomorrow and thought you would appreciate hearing the back story. Room 17 read an article in a Junior Journal about a kakapo. After reading the article they became very concerned about the plight of this endangered, native, flightless, very cute owl parrot. As a result they convinced Mrs Adamson to allow them to hold a Kakapo Day at VAS to raise funds to help save the kakapo.

Consequently, tomorrow everyone is encouraged to wear green and give a gold coin for this cause. Additional to that, room 17 will be selling little bags of  ‘kakapo poo’ (don’t worry not real poo!) and kakapo activity books, each for a dollar. If we raise enough money the children hope to adopt a kakapo for the school.

Please help us to save this precious and iconic green parrot!!

  • Year 0’s will all race together
  • Please note that these are approximate times. While we will endeavour to keep to these times, should it be cold we may start races earlier if necessary.

The Fun Run will be run the same as previous cross country events and, as in the past, all students will be encouraged to do their best with ribbons presented to the three fastest runners in each event. The fastest Year 5 & 6 students will also qualify for the zones cross country event which is to be held on 17th September.

We will be needing the help of parents on the day so if you are able to help with our cross country/fun run on 5th September please complete the attached form by next Thursday.

While we are offering this as an opportunity for students to fundraise, and earn rewards, this aspect is totally optional. If you would like to be involved in the fundraising, without the added incentives of prizes, students can collect and record sponsors in the back of their Fun Run booklet and bring this money directly to school after the event.

Winter Field Day

On Tuesday many of our Year 5 & 6 students took part in the Winter Field Day in which teams represented Victoria Avenue School in football, rugby, hockey and netball.
Thanks to all the players for their enthusiastic, and positive participation, and to all the parents who helped out by managing teams, umpiring games and supporting on the sidelines. All in all it was a successful day for all and a few highlights are captured below…

The Year 5 Tui’s netball team were particularly successful, winning all six games they played.

Congratulations to the team: Harriet Richards, Alexis Tree, Claudia Hughes,  Dulcie Snelgrove, Olivia Halliday, Sammy Webber, Zara Revill and Mila Walsh.

The VAS A football team had a great day of sport, playing their best throughout the games and ending up third place in the tournament.

Congratulations to the players – Connor Clark, Cooper Thomson, Daniel Soldinger, Will Munro, Bryan Chu, Daksh Shah, Jonathan Hu, Craig Rong, Zac Hood, Takumi Ozeki and Alannah Brown.

Quiz Night

Friday 6 September

Tickets now available at the Office

Thanks to rooms 17 and 18 who sent in baking last Friday, they raised a whopping $483.70 towards the school’s forest project. Thanks also to the whole school for supporting.

The Champions programme will be running on Thursday lunchtimes from next week, 29th August until the end of term, in room 1. Champions is a fun, engaging 30 minute lesson which allows students to learn about positive Christian values and beliefs. The Christian Religious Education programme weaves together Bible stories with values set out in the New Zealand Curriculum. The Bible stories are used to illustrate and teach different values such as loving your neighbour, personal worth, courage, inclusion and forgiveness. All children are welcome to attend on a casual basis.
