One of the learning areas in the New Zealand Curriculum is learning languages. The NZ Curriculum states: In learning languages students learn to communicate in an additional language, develop their capacity to learn further languages, and explore different world views in relation to their own.
We are part of the ALLiS (Asian Language Learning in Schools) cluster along with Remuera Primary, Remuera Intermediate, Meadowbank School, Parnell School, Newmarket School, Cornwall Park School and Epsom Girls Grammar School. This initiative has been set up to promote Asian language teaching in schools. As a cluster we have developed a two year plan which has been differentiated to cater for the needs of each school given that we are all at different stages of having an Asian language taught in our school. It is great that we have, as members of the cluster, schools which many of our students will transition to as they further their education.
VAS and Remuera Primary are the new kids on the block. We are starting the journey and at VAS have introduced 30 minutes of Mandarin teaching in each of the years 2 and 3 classes. Other schools have been teaching an Asian language for a number of years, so their participation in ALLiS is great for us because we can learn from them.
From next year, the hope is that we roll Mandarin teaching out to another year level and by 2020, all students will be learning Mandarin. We are delighted to have been able to employ Lijun Guan, a fully qualified teacher, to teach Mandarin at VAS. She has made a great start; in fact I overheard a parent ask her daughter what she loved about school that day? The immediate response was ‘learning Chinese’. We are fortunate to have also have two teachers who speak Mandarin, so we have some wonderful resources in the school already.
We have had a great start as part of the Remuera Chinese New Year Lantern Festival. Many of our children made lanterns and they were on display at various places in Remuera. Congratulations to Henry Jackson, Jamie Watson and Chanel Jayasundera for being in the top 20 finalists in the competition.
The official languages in New Zealand are English, te reo Maori and sign language. Two of the principles of the New Zealand Curriculum state:
- The curriculum acknowledges the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and the bi cultural foundations of Aotearoa New Zealand. All students have the opportunity to acquire knowledge of te reo Maori me ona tikanga.
- The curriculum reflects New Zealand’s cultural diversity and values the histories and traditions of all its people.
I am so pleased that we have the opportunity to teach an Asian language alongside our te reo Maori teaching. We celebrate the diversity we have at VAS.
