NEWSLETTER: Term 1 Week 3 -18 February 2016

Dear Parents

Thank you to everyone who sent me feedback about the new system for ordering stationery. It was all very valuable and will improve the system we use next year.

I have been mindful the past two years that parents have been asked to buy a number of gluesticks, pencils and lots of exercise books at the start of the year in order to keep the stocks up in the classroom throughout the year. This has historically been done to save parents the hassle of having to buy more stationery throughout the year.

This year I culled the numbers of stationery items that were asked for and we now have stationery for sale in the office. I also wanted the lists sent out to parents because I had hoped that parents would be able to look through the list and delete items their child already had eg glue sticks, scissors, rulers etc.

I have had comment from a few parents about the numbers of items they purchased last year eg glue sticks, scissors and they are wondering where the leftover items went at the end of the year. Good point, which is why I want a system whereby parents can choose what they purchase if their child already has the item. Just as an FYI, there are not huge stockpiles of these around the school, pretty much everything was used during the year and as for the scissors, hmmm we don’t have large numbers of those lying around either.

It does seem from your feedback that this option was not easily found on the Office Max site. I know some of you took the list and purchased the items elsewhere at your convenience. I know that some of you with two or more children were just sent the stationery without any lists included, so you had no idea whose stationery was whose! I also know from the feedback that many of you found the new system easy and were pleased with it.

Thank you for your suggestions, they are very helpful. We will tweak the system for next year and hopefully be able to please all of the people all of the time!

Creative shed.001-001

The VAS Creative Shed
We want to get up and running ASAP but we NEED help!
The Creative Shed is a lunchtime initiative that has been running once or twice a week for a number of terms now and the kids LOVE it. We are based out of a large storage cupboard next to the field and in essence, we supply various types of loose parts (a.k.a. junk) for the children to imagine/play/create/co-operate/learn with as they wish during that lunchtime. But all that stuff needs to be put away again!
Help is needed mostly for the packup after the children are back in class but I wouldn’t say no to backup supervision either………
This year we will run on Friday lunchtimes (Term1,2 and 4. Term 3 usually too wet). I would need you for pack up from 1.15pm for approximately half an hour (it varies – more help equals quicker pack up). If you’d like to be there for the whole thing and watch the potential unfold before you (very rewarding to witness), we start to open up at approx 12.15pm.

Blogs on Website and VAS App

Last year we introduced class blogs which you will find access to on our website and app. The blogs have been developed so that they remain with the teacher so you will be able to view not only 2016 posts for each class but archived posts from the teacher’s 2015 class. Blogs for teachers new to our school this year are currently being developed and should be ready for viewing in the coming weeks.

These blogs are intended to be a place to share class learning with you, our wider school community and potentially the world. Positive feedback is always appreciated so when viewing a post please don’t hesitate to post a comment.

Music Concert Band

Music at VAS 2016

Ukulele Club.
This group is for Year 2-6 and meets Monday lunchtimes from 12.30 – 1pm.
If your child would like to be involved this year please send Alison Laxon an email so she can put their name down. Her email address is [email protected] We would like to start the group/s sometime in March so would appreciate hearing from everyone by the end of February so we can determine the organisation for 2016.

Band
This is a new initiative! Currently it is only open to Year 4, 5 and 6 students; preferably ones who already learn an instrument so we are extending their skills through ensemble work. Being able to read music is desirable but is not a necessity. The sign-up sheet is on the noticeboard in the corridor outside the library. Once I have met with the interested children we will determine a time for our practices.
PLEASE NOTE ALL CHILDREN WHO HAVE ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR BAND PLEASE SEE MISS LAXON
