BOT Newsletter October 2016

The Board held its seventh meeting of the year on October 17th.

Busy Term 4

Welcome back to school after the latest term holidays, the wettest weather I can recall for a set of school holidays. This is a really busy term ahead at school, with a lot of work required to tie together the year’s learning at each year level, plus all the additional end-of-year activities.

A big focus for the teachers is the conducting of end-of-year assessments across each of the core curriculum areas, for each child. These assessments are compared to each child’s achievement level at the start of the year, so this is the key measurement of the effectiveness of the school’s teaching throughout the year. The full assessment report will be presented to the Board at its December meeting, and we will report on the highlights after then.

Curriculum Evening – Maths

Thanks to all the parents who attended the recent information evening on maths, and thanks to the teaching staff who took the time to prepare exhibits and exercises and present these to the parents. We’ve received good feedback on the usefulness of this evening and we will make this an annual occurrence, to cover different topics that we think are of particular interest.

Health Survey

We recently conducted a survey of the school community on the delivery of the health curriculum, and we appreciate the feedback from those that completed the survey. In accordance with the Ministry of Education requirements, we have now developed a brief statement about the health curriculum, and this can be viewed on the school’s website.

School Gala

The school has delivered a fabulous gala every second year for a few years now, but unfortunately this will be deferred in 2017. This is due to no-one having been prepared to volunteer for the key role of Gala Organiser – a very demanding and significant role. We are hopeful that we will be able to fill this role and hold a gala in 2018. This will lead to a decrease in the fundraising contribution to the school next year. The PTS is hoping to plan a couple of different events to partially replace the gala – watch out for further news next year.

In the meantime, this is an opportune time to remind everyone that our school relies on a great amount of voluntary time from a lot of people across our community. We understand that everyone leads busy lives, but please do all take every chance to contribute and help to keep our school year as vibrant and varied as possible.
