The Year Five camp at the Sir Peter Blake Maine Education and Recreation Centre (M.E.R.C) is fast approaching.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We are delighted to be able to send out this newsletter advising you of the upcoming Year 5 Camp! It is going to be held at the tried and true, Camp MERC in Long Bay. It is a three day and two night camp and it is going to be brilliant! Camp will be from Wednesday 2nd May until Friday 4th May, the second week of Term 2 and it will sneak up on us quicker than you may think!

Your child should have brought home a pile of paperwork containing:

Health Profile
Parental Consent
• Parent Helper Form
Transport Form
Swimming Consent

These forms should have been returned to school by Thursday 29th March. (Except for the gear list and this notice which you are to retain for your own information.)

Invoices for camp have been sent home today, 29 March and is  $195.

Camp MERC has its own instructors, who will lead the children through a variety of on-water and off-water activities during the three days. Some of these activities are kayaking, archery, surfing and abseiling.

The camp is fully catered, and dietary requirements will be organised for those needing alternative food options. The catering begins on the first day for dinner, so please ensure you send your child along with a large lunch and some snacks for the first day.

There will be a meeting held at school in Week 1 of Term 2 which will provide you with more information, and allow you the opportunity to have your questions answered.

Please send the forms back ASAP, as we intend to advise the parents who will be joining us on the camp by Friday 30th March.

Cooking up a storm at Year 6 Camp 2012

Camps for Years 4 - 6
Camp is an important aspect of our Education Outside the Classroom Programme which provides valuable opportunities for students to experience and learn about the outdoors. Camps are planned every year for all students in Years Four, Five and Six.

This year our Year Six students spent a week in the Hunua Ranges where they took part in activities such as a high ropes course, abseiling, kayaking, orienteering, archery and raft building. Additionally, a fun day was spent at Sonshine Ranch where students experienced horse riding, a flying fox through the bush and a water confidence course. Trained instructors supervised all activities at this camp.

Every year the Year Five students spend three days at the Sir Peter Blake Marine Education and Recreation Centre at Long Bay. Under the supervision of trained instructors, they have the opportunity to take part in a range of team and individual challenges such as sailing, surfing, kayaking and abseiling.

Year 4 Camp Programme 2012
Commences ~ 7.45 am on Thursday 15 March.

Year 4 Camp Programme 2012
Commences ~ 7.45 am on Thursday 15 March.

Camp will start at 7.45 am on Thursday 15 March. The children will meet their teachers and ‘tribe’ leaders in the hall. They will then be bussed to the ferry building where they will catch the 9.15am ferry to Rangitoto Island.

Over on the island the children will complete ‘tribal challenges’ including conquering the volcano, team building activities and a series of questions to challenge their thinking.

We will return to Auckland on the 3.30pm ferry where we will be brought back to school by bus.

When back at school the children will organise themselves into their tent groups. A parent will be assigned to each tent for safety reasons. The evening programme will be held in the hall and will consist of singing, games and entertainment before supper and lights out at (or before) 9.30pm.

On Friday the children will complete a series of fun problem-solving challenges in their Tribes.

Camp will officially finish at 3.00pm and parents are welcome to pick their child up from the school hall.

The main aims of camp are to help children have fun and work together and develop independence. However, we will not hesitate to contact you should the need arise. Stuart will be contactable throughout the duration of the camp on 0275871861.

Are you ready for an adventure? Are you a team player? Are you keen for lots of fun and laughing? If so…then read on!
Good news Year 5 Students! The planning for your camp for next year is already well underway and I’d have to say it is looking VERY exciting. You’ll need to be really kind to Mum and Dad and try to do some jobs over the next few months so that you can help pay for some of the expenses. I bet they’d love their car washed, gardens weeded and washing folded, so get creative and see just how much money you can fundraise before our camp in March…you’ve got just over 4 months.

We only have a very few to get organised and then in week 5 we will all be off to Camp Hunua for three nights and four days. They promise to be the most action-packed, fun-filled, and brilliant days and nights that you will have for 2012. You will be with all of your friends, fabulous teachers and some parent helpers too. During the four days you will be kayaking, team-building, bush-crafting, orienteering, arching, raft-building and doing the flying kiwi to name a few! You’ll even be taking part in the VAS ‘Amazing Race’!

There are a few details that mum and dad will need to know about, so you must make sure that you show them this notice and keep them up to date! We also need some mum and dad’s to volunteer to help us out during the week, so please ask them nicely if they would be able to assist the teachers.

To make sure that we all have a really happy, safe and fun time at camp there is lots of paper work that we need to do , because each of you are really special and we want to find out all about your health and other details that will make sure we can look after you while you are away.
Please can you try to get these forms all filled in over the holidays, and returned to Miss Gibson in Room 6 by the end of the second week of Term 4 (Friday 4th November) please?

I hope that you are as excited as I am…it’s going to be an amazing time and loads of fun,

Kia kaha,
Miss Hayley Gibson (Syndicate Leader Year 5/6)
