1. Senior Speech Competition Tuesday 15th June for some would seem just any normal day but for thirteen Year 5 and 6 students here at Victoria Avenue School it was one unlike any other.
During Term two Victoria Avenue’s Senior School had been hard at work preparing for class speech competitions. All were motivated and ready for their chance to grab the audiences’ attention, in the hope, to be good enough to, represent their class against other senior classes in the finals.
Teachers found the task of selecting finalist difficult with the standard of speeches being so high.
Finalists were: Rupert Phillips, Abby Pool, Ishan Naik, Calvin Fraser, Dylan Brown, Gabby Pittar, Angus Cleland, Livvy Mortimer, Ben Cooper, Sam Hart, Dan Young, George Macgill and Zoe Fong
With stage set and judges Mr Short, Mrs Cameron and guest judge Mrs Slater in their seats it was time to begin. All of the class finalists did themselves proud.
After judges had made their decision the winners were announced.
In 3rd equal position was Room 1’s Rupert Phillips with his speech on life as the youngest boy and Room 4’s Ben Cooper with his speech of Gibber (talking).
In Second place was Room 5’s Sam Hart speaking on ‘The look.’
The title winner for Victoria Avenue School's 2010 speech final was Room 4’s Livvy Mortimer and her fantastic example of remembering those who come second and her speech topic of ‘Second the best!’
2. Winter Illnesses Over the past couple of weeks we have had a large number of absences, both staff and children. As winter approaches this is not unusual, we usually see an increase in respiratory illnesses, coughs, colds and flu. As parents and caregivers, we ask for your help during this time by following some simple steps:
A. If your child shows flu like symptoms, please keep them home until checked and okayed by a doctor or nurse to return to school.
B. If your child has been vomiting or has diarrhoea , please keep them home for at least a day.
C. Reinforce healthy messages with your children:
Teach the importance of hand washing and drying – especially before meals and after toileting.
Teach your children to use a disposable tissue when coughing or sneezing.
D. We hope that all parents have kept school informed of any changes in emergency contact details but if you have made any changes of late and not informed school please contact the office next week. We have had a number of cases of sick children for whom we have not been able to make contact with parents during the school day.
The staff will do their best to ensure that all students at our school are kept as safe as possible by reinforcing the healthy messages surrounding personal hygiene.
3. Lost Property notice - There is large amount of lost property (too much is unnamed), including mufti from the World Cup breakfasts etc. It will be on display from Monday in the school hall. If it is not claimed it will be sent to a good home via the clothing bins at the top of the teacher's drive at the end of the term.
5. Time restriction and bus stop changes on Victoria Ave are scheduled to begin tomorrow. Please avoid this area while work is in progress. These changes, included 15 minute parking restrictions, are expected to take place tomorrow, Friday 25 June. Parents please ensure that you check the signage in Victoria Avenue as of next week as these NEW parking restrictions in this area will be in place. The area around Victoria Avenue School is regularly patrolled by the city council traffic wardens and the police.
6. Disco - times/pick ups Note the information below and please ensure you pick your children up promptly. There will be NO EFTPOS tomorrow night so please bring cash for treats and drinks. Thank you.
7. Red Socks Day
Next Friday will be the day to show your true colours and get your red socks on to show your support for the Sir Peter Blake Trust. Children who bring a donation of $2 or more, will get a pair of red socks which they will be allowed to wear for the day (full school uniform to be worn please).
Sir Peter Blake liked to wear his red socks for good luck, and during the America’s Cup Challenge of 1995 New Zealanders supported the boat by putting on their own red socks. This year, we’re bringing them back!
National Red Socks Day will be held during Leadership Week on Friday 2nd July 2010 – to encourage schools, organisations and individuals throughout New Zealand to celebrate leadership in action and to remember a great New Zealand leader, Sir Peter Blake.

ROOM 14 - Year 1
Arguments Year One Style -
Great advocates against the question:
"Should we be allowed to drink Coca Cola at School?"
Gabriella Isabella Kasia Adam
Gabriella's Argument: I think Coke is bad for you. Sugar is bad because it can rot your teeth and it can make you fat. Salt can make you drink more and it's bad for your liver
Isabella's Argument: I think you should not bring Coca-Cola to school because it is bad for you. It has sugar. Sugar makes you fat and sugar rots your teeth. Coke has salt in it. I think we should not have Coca-Cola.
Kasia's Argument: I think that Coke is bad for you. I think Coke is bad for your brain and Coke makes you fat. You shouldn't be allowed to bring Coke to school. There is sugar and salt in Coke. There is too much sugar in Coke. Coke makes you thirsty. I think you should'nt be allowed to bring Coke to school.
Adam's Argument: I think you should'nt be allowed to bring Coke to school. Coke can rot your teeth. Coke is not healthy. Coke is bad for your teeth. Some kids like Coke but I don't because it is bad. I think no one should drink it and we should not bring Coke to school.
