Newsletter: Term 4 Week 7 – 30 November 2017

Dear Parents,

It’s the time of year when we think back (usually along the lines of ‘where did the year go?’) and I want to acknowledge all the millions of ways that parents and families have supported the school throughout the year.

You should never underestimate the value of your time. To us, having another pair of hands is invaluable. Teachers in their busy classrooms really appreciate parent help. Whether you are working with children, cutting out, pasting, publishing, tying shoelaces, it all contributes to making a teacher’s role easier.

It is also invaluable having another set of eyes when we take children on EOTC (education outside the classroom) excursions. We have very rigid student to adult ratios which we happily adhere to in order to ensure children’s safety. Obviously, those ratios mean that we can’t go anywhere without parent help. Thank you to all of you who have taken leave from your jobs or put your busy lives on hold to accompany your child’s class on an outing. The children love having you there and the teachers really appreciate it.

Thank you to all of you who have coached and managed sports teams this year. Aniel Smith is fantastic, but even he couldn’t have coached all our teams single handed. We have relied on parents and families to provide the expertise and organisation to support what Aniel does. It has meant that lots of our children have had the opportunity to participate in all manner of sports at all levels with significant successes.

Thank you to parents who have run events, served at events, transported children, helped at camp, cheered on the sidelines, tidied up, distributed, stapled, fixed things, counted money, spent money…… the list goes on. It is through your support and giving of your time that our school is as fantastic as it is.

I just want you all to know how much each of us appreciates it.

While I am thanking people, it is the last week for most of our teacher aides. What an amazing group of people! They work alongside children, helping them to become the best they can be. They support some children in the playground, helping them to be the best friend they can be. Thank you, we are so lucky to have such dedicated, enthusiastic people in our school.

2018 Councillors and House Captains

The votes have been counted and these will be announced at assembly on 8 December at 2pm. This is the Leavers’ Assembly and we will have the traditional arch at the end. All parents are welcome to attend.

Parking Over a Neighbour’s Driveway

PLEASE DON’T! I know you think that because you are sitting in your car across the driveway it is OK. It isn’t OK and our neighbours quite rightly get cross about it. Last week a neighbour took this photo – and the driver wasn’t even in the car!! I am the one that has to apologise and placate our neighbours which is very difficult because I actually agree with them that it is just not on.

Bell Road Walking School Bus 2018

Our energetic kids and parents would love some more walkers to join our bus in 2018, as a couple of families are moving on. We walk daily to school leaving from Bell Road at the top of Shera Road at 8.10am. It’s a great way to give the kids some more independence, less time in the car and an energising start to their day! All it requires is a commitment by one parent or nanny/au pair to join the roster and walk with the children one morning per week. If you are a new family in the area or know of any VAS children moving to the area, please get in touch with Inga Frengley (ingafrengley@yahoo.co.nz or 0212776871) to find out more about joining in Term 1 next year.

Winning Teacher!

Congratulations to our PE Teacher Aniel Smith won the Podium Rotorua Half Marathon on Sunday, in a time of 1h 21m 18s. The event is fairly unique – you go through a forest, circumnavigate two golf courses, run through thermally active Sulphur Bay tracks, past a world famous museum and finish at a lakefront! This success for Mr Smith follows him winning four gold medals and two silver medals at the World Masters Games in April. What a role model!

Reusable Bags on Sale!

As you know, in term 3 the school ran a ‘resuable bag design’ competition. The designs have been transferred into attractive, good quality, hessian bags which as we speak are heading here on a ship.

The lucky prize winners below all receive one of their bags as a prize:
Year 1 – Marina Chen- Room 14
Year 2 – Robbie Baker – Room 8
Year 3 – Crystal Tan – Room 20
Year 4 – Bryan Chu – Room 16
Year 5 – Putri Ardana – Room 6

Click here for the order form to enable you to start your Christmas shopping for Grandparents, Nannies, friends. Just think…you can save the planet, donate money to the school AND do your Christmas shopping with one simple purchase. Please just fill out the form and deliver back to the office.

There is only limited quantities of each design so be in quick – also the class that sells the most bags will get free iceblocks on a Friday after school!

Bags will be delivered to the children’s classrooms in the first week of December, so there will be plenty of time to pack them for goodies before Christmas.

ASB Supporting Success in Your School

Due to the success to date of the ‘Supporting Success in Your School’ scheme ASB will continue to support Victoria Avenue School with the School Sponsorship Voucher until 30 July 2018. The school is awarded a $500 voucher for each customer that mentions VAS and this offer when taking out lending of $250,000 or more (see voucher for further terms). This offer is available to friends and family of the school community as well as parents and teachers. A copy of the voucher is available to download at the ASB website:

www.asb.co.nz/documents/promotions/supporting-success-in-your-school-voucher.html

‘BAGS FOR GOOD NEIGHBOURHOOD’ COMMUNITY CHOICE PARTNER

The school has been selected by The Warehouse to participate in a Community Choice Programme that provides financial support to not-for-profit community groups and organisations. A fund is raised through their customers purchasing a 10cent shopping bag in return for a token, which is then placed in a voting booth (or forgo the bag). At the end of a 6-month period the fund is divided among 3 participating partners based on their percentage of tokens, with the VAS share being put towards much-needed refurbishment of outdoor playground equipment. The VAS voting booth is situated at The Warehouse store in Newmarket and the period runs from August 2017 until January 2018. Please spread the word among friends and family!

If you know of any other loyalty schemes and grants that can benefit the school, please contact Amanda Dick on mrs.amanda.dick@gmail.com
