KIDSZONE

At Victoria Avenue School environmental studies about, in and for the environment are of importance. Where possible, and appropriate, an environmental focus is included into class Inquiry Based Learning studies. This term Years Three and Four took an active role in supporting our local environment by taking part in a beach clean up in association with the Sir Peter Blake Trust.

Each term our school aims to participate in at least one global environmental event to encourage students to develop an awareness of their responsibility as part of a global community. This term our focus in Earth Hour. Children are encouraged to take part by turning off lights at school as part of our school ‘POWER DOWN Day’ on Friday 26 March and to contribute to Earth Day on Saturday 27 March by turning off lights from 8.30-9.30pm.

Our school environment is viewed with pride at Victoria Avenue School with students encouraged to respect and care for it. This term daffodil bulbs have been planted around the grounds by each class so that they can be appreciated in Spring. We are fortunate to be well supported by our parent community with a regular team of parents who contribute to our gardens and regular weekend working bees are always well attended and successful.

A new environmental programme that is soon to be incorporated into our school which is the Trees for Survival programme. This programme, sponsored by Remuera Rotary, will give students throughout the school a unique opportunity to develop a further understanding of the importance of trees in our environment as they grow native trees from seedlings to be planted back into the community. Watch this space for further developments.

Each week students have the opportunity to earn an ‘EnviroCare’ award for their class by making an extra effort to care for our school or local environment  or by making a significant effort to walk to school. At the end of each term the classes with the most ‘EnviroCare’ awards will win an ‘EnviroCare’ tree to be planted in the school grounds in their honour.

Victoria Avenue School is a TravelWise School so promotes sustainable forms of transport. This programme is proudly supported by our seven walking school buses and is encouraged by weekly class awards for walking, as well as regular walk promotion events. This year we are aiming to gain a silver award as part of the Travelwise Awards Scheme.

Your child can also monitor their own walking by registering online at  ‘WOW-Walking on Weekdays’. Click here to find out how to register, walk safely and take part in competitions.

Trees For Survival

Trees for Survival is a hands on environmental education experience promoting the growing and planting of native trees and shrubs. By being part of this programme students will learn about trees and their place in the environment. Plantings of the trees grown will provide 'at risk' land with plant cover, restore eroded land to improve stream and water quality as well as provide habitats for the spread of our native flora and fauna.
