The Board held its first meeting of the year on February 13th. We hope you’ve all had a good break and the kids are refreshed and enthused about a new year at school.
Meet the Teachers evening
Thanks to all who attended this event last week, it was great to see an excellent turnout (standing room only in the hall). Janice provided an excellent overview of the priorities and key topics for 2017, plus some data on how the school’s achievement results have trended over the past couple of years.
Janice provided an update on our property project to overhaul the room 19-21 block, which has become more complicated due to subsidence in that part of the grounds. Janice also spoke about the class sizes in some year groups (Y3 and Y4), where the best laid plans of late 2016 were scuppered by a substantial number of new in-zone enrolments late in the day. While this has resulted in some classes having more children than is our preference, we have no choice but to accommodate everyone. Janice has arranged extra support in the form of teacher aides for key parts of the day.
The Board ratified the operating and capital budgets for the 2017 year. As always, and as with all budgeting exercises, this is a balancing act to ensure all the “must-haves” and as many of the “nice-to-haves” are provided from the finite amount of income we receive.
While the day-to-day running of the school to maintain our high standards is the first priority, the Board also needs to build up its cash reserves so that the property projects can be paid for as soon as the planning processes are complete and work can proceed.
The major contributor to income this year from the community will be the Gala, which will be held on Sunday April 9th. We have budgeted for an overall donation throughout the year from the PTS of $85,000 so we are hopeful of a really good result from the Gala to get the year’s fundraising off to a great start. Please mark the date in your calendars and bring along as many family and friends as you can, and sign up to get involved as a helper or donor.
Please note that in a change this year the donations notices have been sent out by email rather in hard copy. If you have not received your copy yet, please get in touch with Gabs in the school office. And please, pay promptly!
